It’s almost Red Dress Party San Diego and there’s just one simple rule — all guests, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, must wear a red dress or dress-like garment.

Organizers said the color red serves as a powerful symbol of solidarity and compassion for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Although there have been huge strides in HIV prevention and treatment, a great need still exists. It’s estimated every 18 hours a new person tests positive for HIV in San Diego County, according to the nonprofit.

Red Dress Party’s mission is to raise funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS nonprofits throughout the county such as Christie’s Place, Mama’s Kitchen, Stepping Stone of San Diego and Vista Community Clinic

“If left untreated, we know the consequences,” said Steven Shyne, Red Dress Party San Diego’s co-founder and CEO. “That’s why we try to fund across the spectrum of care for testing, prevention, education, treatment and medication.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the fundraiser which launched after a dedicated group of friends banded together to bring the nationwide event to San Diego.

“We did a crowdfunder on Indiegogo and in 10 days we raised $10,000,” Shyne said.

The inaugural Red Dress Party was held at the Museum of Us, attracting around 500 people. At its current location, the Port Pavilion, an open-air mega space with views of the San Diego Bay, the event has grown to 1,000 attendees.

In nine years, the party has raised $350,000 for the San Diego HIV/AIDS community, and this year, with a Casino Royale theme, organizers are betting on a $66,000 goal.

“The casino night includes gaming tables where the money is fake, but the prizes are very real,” Shyne said.

For guests unsure what to wear, partygoers have donned everything from kilts, togas and bathrobes to bed sheets and even a lobster costume.

“No pants, no problem,” Shyne said. “As long as it’s red, you’ll be just fine.”

Red Dress Party San Diego begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. For $10 off general admission or VIP tickets, use code TOSD10
