Tickets are on sale as jazz returns to the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library for its annual series of winter concerts.

The series, in the La Jolla library’s Joan and Irwin Jacobs Music Room, begins Jan. 26 with the Edward Simon Trio. Three more shows are planned through March.

Passes for the series cost $188 for members and $208 for nonmembers. Tickets for
individual shows are $50 for members and $55 for nonmembers.

The series features both Athenaeum favorites and debuts:

  • Jan. 26 – Edward Simon Trio, led by Simon, a pianist-composer-arranger. He will be joined by bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Adam Cruz. Simon’s last Athenaeum performance as a leader was for his project Femeninas: Songs of Latin American Women. He returns for the release of Latin American Songbook, Vol. 2, focused on the Afro-Caribbean traditions of his native Venezuela.
  • March 7 – Allison, Cardenas & Nash make their local debut. The trio of New York City–based artists includes bassist Ben Allison, guitarist Steve Cardenas and saxophonist Ted Nash. They have released four albums, including their latest, Tell the Birds I Said Hello: The Music of Herbie Nichols, a pianist-composer often compared to Thelonious Monk.
  • March 12 – Sullivan Fortner Trio, featuring New Orleans-native Fortner on piano, Tyrone Allen on bass and Kayvon Gordon on drums.
  • March 19 – Avishai Cohen Quartet, featuring Cohen on trumpet, Yonathan Avishai on piano, Barak Mori on bass, and Ziv Ravitz on drums. In 2024, Cohen released his latest album, Ashes to Gold.

Each show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the library, 1008 Wall St.
