Library’s Black History Month Celebration Includes Author Talk, Youth Activities, More

The San Diego Public Library will host free, all-ages programming for Black History Month, including an author discussion, concert and crafts.
The library will host several lectures, discussions and story times during February at the Central and branch locations.
“The San Diego Public Library’s Black History Month programming explores the richness and diversity of the Black experience and identity,” said Library Director Misty Jones. “Working with our community partners, SDPL staff has created unique opportunities for people to connect through stories and shared experiences.”
Examples of events include Crafternoon, with a Kente Cloth paper craft for grades K-3 at the Tierrasanta Library, 4:30 p.m. Feb. 12, and Create It! Programs for Youth, focusing on creation of a Freedom Quilt, on Feb. 13 at the Central Library and Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library.
Black History Month events later in the month include:
- Fearing the Black Body: Racial Origins of Fat Phobia with Dr. Sabrina Strings, 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at Central Library. Presented in partnership with the University of San Diego. She will discuss the idea that the ideal of thinness is, at its core, radicalized and racist.
- Afro-Mexicanos: Mexico Finally Recognizes Its Black Citizens, 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Central Library. WorldBeat Cultural Center’s Jorge Gonzalez will lead a discussion on the presence and omission from history of people of African descent in Mexico.
