OnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista has announced the launch of a special fundraising run of the critically acclaimed drama Lonely Planet.

The production runs on select dates beginning Friday, continuing through July 16.

The entire run will be donation-based, allowing patrons to secure their seats online for the amount they wish to contribute (a minimum of $10 due to ticketing site fees).

Pay-what-you-can seats also will be available at the door for each performance, on a first-come, first-served basis. By offering this unique opportunity, the playhouse aims to make the play accessible to a wide audience while still supporting the theater’s fundraising.

Lonely Planet, published in 1993 and set during the height of the AIDS crisis, follows the story of Jody, a map store owner who finds solace within the confines of his shop, disconnected from the outside world. As a haunting reminder, Jody’s friend Carl brings in chairs from departed friends, adding a poignant layer to their friendship.

Artistic Director James P. Darvas said the playwright, Steven Dietz, “has crafted a tremendous conversation piece.”

“He skillfully guides us through the complexities of love, loss, hope, fear, and ultimately acceptance of the unknown,” Darvas said. “Each and every page of this production offers theater worth talking about.”

The playhouse also welcomes back Teri Brown, a former artistic director of the theater, to direct Lonely Planet. Darvas portrays Jody, while Salomon Maya plays Carl.

For tickets, see the playhouse website or call (619) 422-7787.
