San Diego Weekend Guide: Feb. 14-16 – Holiday Weekend Edition

Sure, Valentine’s Day is Friday, but don’t waste a weekend. And a long weekend at that (yea, Washington and Lincoln)! Treat your Valentine (or Galentine) this whole San Diego weekend with music, sports, film, fungus – yes, you read it right – and more.
For the movie fan in your life, bundle up for Cinema Under the Stars, which is screening Oscar nominee A Real Pain, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Stars Jesse Eisenberg – who also wrote and directed the film – and Kieran Culkin butt heads on a tour to honor their late grandma. Tickets for the event, in Mission Hills, range from $17-20.
Black Comix Day at the WorldBeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park shines a light on the major contributions of Black artists to the thriving comic book industry in hopes of inspiring other people of color. The free fest starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and continues Sunday. RSVP online.
Excitement is building for San Diego FC, with a week to go before the pro soccer expansion club’s first game. RSVPs for the Season Kickoff Party at Snapdragon Stadium, the team’s new home, are closed, but never fear! Try the shopping event at Eighteen Threads at noon Saturday instead. The event, at the team’s Mission Valley Mall store, includes a free Taste of San Diego so fans can shop for gear and enjoy tasty samples from local restaurants too.
Do sweet nothings trip up your tongue? Let the Bard do the heavy lifting. Actors from the San Diego Shakespeare Society will perform romantic selections from some of his best-known works at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. General museum admission is $20.
Peachy San Diego comes to SOMA at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with a bill featuring 13 acts, including Enjoy, Puzzle, George Clanton, quannnic, Mind’s Eye and more, on two stages. Tickets are $61.
Mount Rushmore salutes four of our greatest presidents. With apologies to Thomas Jefferson, barleymash on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp is offering specialty cocktails for its “Mount Party-more” President’s Weekend. And what a way to remember them: cocktail specials include “Meet George Sloshington” with Skyy Raspberry Vodka, lemon, cranberry, and ginger beer, “Abraham Drinkin’” with Skyy Vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple and lemon, and “Theodore Boozevelt” with Skyy Blood Orange Vodka, coconut, lemon, and tropical Red Bull. Drop by from Saturday to Monday for a taste.
The 15th annual Coronado Valentine’s Day Run is made up of a 5K, 10K and 1-mile fun run, but honestly it’s all about hearts and tutus and unicorns and whatever costumes a runner with a creative bent can don and still make it through the course. The one-mile run begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday; the 10K and 5K runs follow at 8 a.m. If you’ve got love on your mind, runners will wear red, yellow or green bibs to show their relationship status and there will be post-race music and live entertainment. Registration starts at $36.
Mushrooms – good on salads, soups, pizza and more. And if they’re good enough for the table, they’re good enough for a fest. Celebrate them at the Fungus Fair, 10 a.m. Sunday at Balboa Park’s Casa del Prado. There will be bites, growers, speakers – one will discuss “truffle culture” – and a 1 p.m. costume contest and parade for the more adventurous among the fungi faithful.
