San Diego Weekend Guide: March 28-30 – Fests & Flings

We’re thisclose to spring break! This San Diego weekend, feel the fever with theater, music, sports, crafts and more.
A local favorite, the B-Side Players, lands at one of San Diego’s hottest venues, the Lafayette Hotel’s Lou Lou’s Jungle Room in North Park, at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets, before fees, cost $22.
“AIn’t nobody comin’ to see you, Otis!” – that infamous line, from the mini-series about the classic Motown stars, the Temptations, will not be in Broadway San Diego’s Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. Why? Because the show is based on the memoir by the man himself, Otis Williams, the last living member of the Temps. The musical, filled with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group’s hits, returns Friday to begin a three-day run at the San Diego Civic Theatre, including Saturday and Sunday matinees. Tickets start at $56.
Sadly, March Madness ended rather quickly for all the San Diego teams, but spring has sprung and there’s baseball and beer to make it all better:
- East Village Block Party – It’s a fresh slate for the Padres – heck, it’s not even April yet. Gather in front of Petco Park at 10 a.m. Saturday on J Street between Sixth and 10th avenue to be part of the fun. The free, family-friendly fest features vendors, live music, beer and cocktails and a car show. The ballgame follows at 4:15 p.m.
- Pucks & Pints – The all-day hockey festival begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Pechanga Arena with a craft beer showcase by Bay City Brewing, barbecue and games. Watch a charity game between brewers, then top off the day when the pros, the San Diego Gulls the Calgary Wranglers, face off. Tickets, which benefit local charities, cost $65.
Need Easter and Mother’s Day ideas? The Warner Springs Artisan Guild presents its free Spring Fling art and craft show at Julian Town Hall, 2129 Main St. Make it a day trip and score one-of-a-kind creations from local artists. Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday.
WarriorSide begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at the House of Blues, offering those who’ve served in special ops, including Navy SEALs, along with other veterans and first responders, the chance to share personal stories about their service. Tickets start at $53.
Spring is the season for the Flower Fields in Carlsbad, but on weekends, ranunculus aren’t the only draw. There’s various workshops, fitness classes and tastings too, along with live music. From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, stroll the fields, where 35 acres are in bloom, and listen to Cool Rush. At the same time Sunday, the Bayou Brothers perform. General admission costs $27.
