San Diego Weekend Guide: Sept. 5-7 – Grapes & Gears


Opa! This weekend is bananas! (Sorry, preparatory pun). Sway to folk music or house beats – stomp if you please – or just watch pups catch a wave. This San Diego weekend has all that and more.
It’s baseball, but not quite. The Savannah Bananas are bringing their brand of “Banana Ball” to Petco Park, but if you want a taste, turn to the secondary market. The “games,” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, are sold out – in fact, tickets are gone for the entire month across the country – but a smattering of resale tix are out there, most at double or more of the $35 base Banana price.
The Cardiff Greek Festival, at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, offers music and folk dancing beginning at noon each day on the main stage, along with a range of culinary options. Admission is $4, but the fest ha nice freebie options too – kids get in free, as (with proper ID) do first responders, active-duty military and veterans. Gates open at 10 am. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
Stroll the Sunset Cliffs Auto Show on Point Loma Avenue at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in Ocean Beach for the best in lovingly preserved classics, but also for food trucks, music, games for kids and a raffle too. The fun starts at 10 a.m. Saturday with after-parties expected in OB.
If you like your TV vintage, then you’re probably a fan of “I Love Lucy,” the comedy classic. The 28th annual Julian Grape Stomp Festa at Menghini Winery leans hard into Lucy nostalgia and one of the most famous episodes of the storied sitcom. The festa, opening at 11 a.m. Saturday, features music by the All Star Lucy Band and Beard and The Bird, a Lucy lookalike contest, and of course, grape stomping. Admission costs $25 for adults and $8 for kids.
The Afrodiaspora Festival, which shines a light on Afrobeats, dancehall and Afrohouse, features headliner TxC and more at Waterfront Park. Admission is $45, but there is a two-for-one deal available for the day, which starts at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Raise a glass to Music Box, which hosts Kansas City-based singer/songwriter Kevin Morby, James Bishop and DJ Ian Utero for a party to celebrate the India Street venue’s 10th anniversary. General admission is $40 for the show, at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon boasts furry surfers and sunny vibes. Is anything else needed to close out a weekend? Head to Del Mar Dog Beach at 8 a.m. Sunday for the event, which supports the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Put your dog on a board for $25, but watching all the dogs on boards, plus the costume contest and adoption fair? That’s free.
Serpentine Cider & Smokehouse near Miramar hosts Medieval Festival 2.0 featuring new ciders, mead and beer collaborations and turkey legs and other feast food. Feeling like fightin’? The Kingdom of Terre Neuve offers live battle demonstrations and ooooh, sword-fighting techniques. The fest, for 21 and up and starting at noon Sunday, is at the Miralani Makers’ District, 8680 Miralani Drive, Suite 8665.
