No slurping: ‘Across the Spooniverse’ opens at Mingei International Musuem

A new exhibit highlighting the artfulness in a simple object that can be found in all of our kitchens opened Saturday at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park.

“Across the Spooniverse” showcases over 100 spoons – some straight from nature, like a curved seashell, others crafted from clay or cast metal – from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and everywhere inbetween.

“Through exhibitions like our 2024 show, ‘Cups to Connections,’ and now ‘Across the Spooniverse,’ we reveal how everyday objects carry a shared significance across cultures,” said Jessica Hanson York, executive director and CEO of the Mingei International Musuem. “Generous hospitality and the community found in sharing a meal are universal experiences.”

By highlighting a universally understood utensil, “Across the Spooniverse” explores the cultural context behind each item and how they reflect sentiments of home, family and community.

“These objects are both functional and brilliantly artful,” Emily Hanna, director of exhibitions and chief curator at the Mingei, said. “They symbolize concepts of abundance, generosity, and exchange.”

Each spoon showcases a unique design, reflecting the work of makers – most of whom remain unknown – throughout time and cultures. Some are adorned with carvings of animals and show signs of years of use while others remain in pristine condition.

This exhibition features spoons from Mingei’s permanent collection, a selection of traditional spoons from the collection of Susan and Richard Ulevitch, and works by contemporary artists Erica Moody, Adam John Manley, and others.

Members of the Mingei can visit the exhibition, which continues through Aug. 17, for free. General admission for adults is $15, while seniors, students, military and educators can purchase tickets for $10.
