San Diego Made Summer Market to bring talented creatives to Liberty Station

LIBERTY STATION – A nonprofit is holding a family-friendly summer market from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Preble Field in Liberty Station.

The field’s large grassy area at 2455 Cushing Road will be transformed into a lively celebration of creativity and community engagement for the San Diego Made Summer Market.

The two-day event will feature more than 120 craft vendors, gourmet food trucks, live music performances, interactive art and workshops, kids’ activities, free photo ops and more.

Attendees can enjoy plenty of social media-worthy moments with free photo opportunities and an array of food and drink options. A scavenger hunt also will take place. The card to participate will be available at the entrance and those who complete it will receive a handmade gift at the exit (while supplies last).

Admission is $5. Children 10 and under are free. Tickets to the market can be purchased at sdmademarkets.com or in person at the summer market entrance.

The market is being staged by San Diego Made, a nonprofit artist collective that aims to increase awareness of, and opportunities for, local artists and makers within the San Diego community. The organization provides an online directory of local makers and artists, as well as holding events and providing professional development opportunities.

“San Diego Made is an artist’s collective founded by four women,” said Alice Sockwell, the collective’s marketing coordinator. “It’s two different wings. There’s a nonprofit where we have artists who have studios, and also we do events and a co-working space. Then we have the markets that we do throughout San Diego. We’re just really high on small business. We’re looking to give artists a platform so they can get more public exposure.”

Sockwell noted San Diego Made typically holds its markets seasonally and during major holidays. She pointed out that the company’s Liberty Station connection is a strong one, as the company’s founders first started marketing out of Building 177 at the station.

She noted that there will be an impressive selection of vendors at the upcoming summer market.

“They’re all local businesses or artists,” she said. “We’ll have a variety of different vendors, people who make jewelry, and some good bakers. We’ll also have people who do woodworking or make things like clothing, candles, and ceramics.”

Added Sockwell: “We also will have lots of activations and super creative kids’ interactive workshops where they do fun things like decorating sunglasses. We’ll also have games for kids and family-friendly things for everyone.”
