San Diego Weekend Guide: Jan. 17-19 – MLK Holiday Edition

Celebrate MLK this San Diego weekend along with providing a helping hand for Los Angeles. Local clubs and restaurants are stepping up for wildfire relief and inviting you to join in.

For Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, join in community to honor his legacy and sacrifice:

• Ringer’s Roller Rink near Chollas Park hosts Community Day beginning at 3 p.m. Friday. DJ Mister Hek spins music from 5 to 9 p.m. Skating is $5 for the day.
• Make a day of it at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade down Harbor Drive at 11 a.m. Sunday. Float, marching bands fraternities and sororities and more will take part. There’s a 5K fun run too, along with a festival.
• Common Ground Theatre, performs at First United Methodist Church of San Diego in Mission Valley as part of Racial Justice Sunday. The show, at 12:15 p.m. Sunday with lunch, costs $15.
• The WorldBeat Cultural Center at Balboa Park hosts its free King Day celebration at noon Monday with Pato Banton and the Now Generation Band and a full slate of performers, cultural dancing, blessings, craft vendors and more.

Arte Latino in Escondido at 4 p.m. Saturday will spotlight visual artists whose work adds another layer of creativity to the annual San Diego Latino Film Festival. Head to Pako Pablos Studios at North County Mall for the mixer, with music and cocktails.

Need some island vibes as the January chill sets in? Gates open at 4 p.m. Saturday for the HoloHolo Music Festival at Oceanside’s newest venue, FrontWave Arena. The lineup features Common Kings, out of Orange County, Josh Tatofi, Spawnbreezie, K’Nova and 8RO8. Ticket start at $65.

Round 2 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship comes to Snapdragon Stadium Saturday with top off-road riders. Practice and qualifying take place Saturday morning and afternoon leading up to the 5 p.m. opening ceremonies. Admission starts at $54.

You know the Convoy District is the place for Asian eats in the city. But if you want to learn more about the area while enjoying all the bites try “Flavors and Stories,” a food crawl sponsored by the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum. Tickets for the meetup, beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday, cost $108.

Eat, dance and drink to help out – here’s some of the San Diego spots pitching in to support wildfire victims:

• Several restaurants – Cloak & Petal in Little Italy, Original 40 Brewing Company in North Park and PRK 101 in Carlsbad among them – will give a portion of their proceeds from select dishes to help fire victims as part of Dining for Disaster Relief, through Jan. 31. The drive benefits the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.
• The Casbah hosts “A Little Help For Our Friends,” a benefit concert for Los Angeles, at 4 p.m. Sunday. The slate includes Tyson Motsenbocker, Francis Blume, Alex Bergan, Dulaney & Co., Justin John Rodriguez, Hippy Goods and more. Tickets for the show, are $20 online and $25 at the door.
• Herb & Wood in Little Italy will host a popup fundraiser at 1 p.m. Monday with more than a dozen top San Diego chefs, including Tara Monsod and Drew Deckman, offering up their takes on smash burgers, oysters and fries. All proceeds go to World Central Kitchen’s aid for L.A. Admission is $50.
