San Diego Weekend Guide: May 10-12 – Mother’s Day Edition

Moms are on our minds this San Diego weekend – whether current moms, aspiring moms or great mom surrogates, they all deserve a special treat. It’s not just about brunch – there’s more than one fest she might enjoy, lots of good eats and some shopping too.

One note – there is a lot going from the airport area across downtown to the East Village with music fests and the Dodgers visiting Petco Park. Plan accordingly.

The Gator by the Bay Zydeco, Blues and Crawfish Festival continues its four-day stint at Spanish Landing Park with more than 100 musical acts on seven stages, as well as an amazing spread of southern cuisine – especially the 10,000 pounds of fresh crawfish trucked west from Louisiana. Start the weekend early at 3:30 p.m. Friday; the gates open at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission ranges from $25 to $85 for day and session passes.

The Old Globe’s Stir, by Melinda Lopez and Joel Perez and directed by Marcela Lorca, has a very mom-focused theme. The comedy centers on siblings who reunite to share their mother’s favorite recipe. But the simple project ends up taking them to a far deeper place. See it through May 26. Tickets start at $33 for evenings and matinees this weekend.

Wonderfront takes up a lot of real estate along the waterfront, with stages at multiple sites, including Embarcadero Marina Park North, Seaport Village and Ruocco Park. Gates open at noon Friday through Sunday with established vets like Weezer, Beck, the Roots and Steel Pulse performing alongside emerging artists like Q, Paris Texas and Abby Anderson and sensations like Kaytranada and Channel Tres. Daily tix cost $135, with passes starting at $329. Ticketless tip: Brave the crowds to squeeze in at the two free stages at Seaport Village.

The San Diego American Indian Health Center’s free Balboa Park Pow Wow takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the corner of Park Boulevard and President’s Way. See a range of performances, including drummers, Aztec and inter-tribal dancers, along with bird singing and gourd dancing, while enjoying craft and food vendors.

The Coronado Art and Wine Festival begins at noon Saturday. The free event off C Avenue and 10th Street features more than 80 artist booths, a wine village and bubbles bar, live entertainment and a children’s craft zone. Tasting and VIP admissions start at $50.

The free Fiesta de los Peñasquitos, at noon Saturday on Black Mountain Road between Carmel Mountain Road and Twin Trails Drive, features over 150 booths, food courts, food trucks. For fun, there’s carnival rides and two entertainment stages for live music, dance numbers and demos.

Karl Strauss’ The Outpost San Marcos beer garden on Armorlite Avenue hosts a free Makers Market by I  Indie Markets at 1 p.m. Saturday with dozens of artists. The dog- and kid-friendly event includes street tacos and burritos from the Karl Strauss food truck. Not to mention lots of chances for last-minute mom shopping.
