Thee Sacred Souls come back home and some lost 80s hits get found — This week in live music

Thee Sacred Souls at Gallagher Square at Petco Park

One of the biggest musical success stories to emerge from San Diego in the past decade, Thee Sacred Souls take the stage at Gallagher Square at Petco Park on Aug. 28. Mixing up sweet soul, gospel, and doo-wop, the trio is currently touring in support of a new single, “Any Old Fool.” Meanwhile, the band continues its upward trajectory, with appearances on TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “Austin City Limits,” as well as a sold-out show at The Hollywood Bowl earlier this month. Thee Sacred Souls have been on the road much of the year, so this homecoming show will have an extra celebratory feel to it.

The Stinkfoot Orchestra wafts through the Music Box

Iconic guitarist Frank Zappa has many connections to San Diego. A resident of the area in the mid 1950s, Zappa famously attended Mission Bay High School and got his start locally performing with a group called The Ramblers before taking off to national stardom. Local Zappa fans will want to head to Music Box on Aug. 28 for an appearance by The Stinkfoot Orchestra, a 14-Piece Tribute to Frank Zappa. Giving the evening’s musical selections extra authenticity, the group features singer and saxophonist Napoleon Murphy Brock, who performed with Zappa during the early 1970s, contributing to such classic albums as “Bong Fury” and “Apostrophe.”

Tenor saxophonist Brian Levy Brings Some Jazz to La Jolla

Tenor saxophonist Brian Levy stops in at the La Jolla Community Center on Aug. 28, as part of their Fourth Friday Jazz Concert Series. A director of jazz studies at SDSU, Levy is a truly gifted player. Playing both in solo mode as well as touring internationally with acclaimed group, The Rick Hollander Quartet, Levy is making a mark with his own music, while also helping guide future generations of musicians. For this show, Levy will be joined by Luca Alemanno (double bass) and Jason Shattil (piano), with the trio set to perform a Centennial Tribute to legendary saxophone player John Coltrane.

Reggae Revival — TJ Roots Collective, at The Holding Company

Reggae aficionados won’t want to miss Steve Knight, backed by the TJ Roots Collective, at The Holding Company on Aug. 29. First releasing music in the mid 1980s, Knight scored with a string of classic singles, including “Robber Man” and “Down In Jamaica,” the latter a recast version of former San Diegan, Stephen Bishop’s 1976 hit, “On and On.” Knight recently ended a 25-year hiatus from recording with the release of a new album, “Steve Knight Returns,” featuring a solid new single, “Marry You,” but fans can rest assured the night’s set will be built around his vintage hits.

Lost 80s gets found at Humphrey’s

Touring mini-festival, Lost 80s Live, comes to Humphreys Concerts by the Bay on Aug. 29. A veritable live jukebox of 1980s hitmakers, attendees will be treated to performances of some of the decade’s best-known songs, by the original artists, including Men Without Hats (“Safety Dance”), Musical Youth (“Pass the Dutchie”), and Katrina of Katrina and The Waves (“Walking on Sunshine”). Just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to onstage talent. Other performers set to take part in the Lost 80s Live concert include such favorites as Big Country, The Vapors, The Icicle Works, Dramarama, China Crisis, B-Movie, and Stacey Q. With a mix of genres that includes reggae, new wave, dance pop, power-pop and more, and short sets that stick to the artists biggest hits, this is a dream gig for fans of music from the 1980s.

Classic Albums Live celebrates The White Album

Acclaimed tribute band, Classic Albums Live, returns to the Rady Shell on Aug. 29 for a run-through of The Beatles’ 1968 self-titled 2-LP set, aka “The White” album. While the album’s 30 songs includes hits like “Back In The U.S.S.R.” “Obla Di Obla Da” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” it’s also the Beatles most adventurous work, containing some of the group’s least covered works including “Wild Honey Pie” “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” and “Revolution 9.” For many Beatles fans, the opportunity to hear a live version of the latter, an 8:23 experimental sound collage, is worth the price of admission alone. Classic Albums Live’s performance of “The White Album” will be a great show for both casual Beatles fans as well as die-hard listeners.

Karlos Paez of the B-Side Players hits Lou Lou’s

Frontman for the legendary combo, B-Side Players, Karlos Paez, performs a solo show at Lou Lou’s on Aug. 30. A mainstay of the local music community since the early 1990s, Paez draws from many of the same inspirations as his main group, mixing reggae and funk with Afro-Latin rhythms and socially conscious lyrics. Paez also mixes in choice covers such as Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved,” but his own material is strong enough to keep Lou Lou’s dance floor packed all night long.

Danyavaad And The Shimmy Sisters, at the Tango Del Rey

Recently reunited world fusion rock and belly dance group, Danyavaad And The Shimmy Sisters, make their first San Diego appearance in seven years at Tango Del Rey on Aug. 30. Blending Middle Eastern and Indian sounds, the group has issued two albums of original music to date, with the current reunion set to include a forthcoming new release. However, this is a group that needs to be experienced live for the full effect. Danyavaad And The Shimmy Sisters’ visuals are just as important as the music, with the dancers, costumes and instrumentation, particularly from sitarist Greg Vaughan, being a big part of their appeal.

Country singer-songwriter Sara Petite at Belly Up

On Sept. 2, The Belly Up Tavern hosts a release show for country singer-songwriter Sara Petite’s eighth album, “HerStory: Snakes, Wolves and Honky Tonk Angels.” Backed by a terrific band that includes bassist Chris Sullivan (The Farmers), Petite will close the night with a performance of the new album in its entirety. Attendees will want to arrive early for a set from “Sara Petite’s Americana Roundup – Honky Tonk Angels,” featuring Petite alongside local Americana music scene all-stars, Chloe Lou, Lauren Leigh, Ashley E. Norton, and Thea Tochihara, playing a mix of classic country tunes and like-minded originals.

La Bamba comes to the Epstein Family Amphitheater

The life of 1950s-era rocker Ritchie Valens is celebrated on Sept. 2 with a multimedia concert at the Epstein Family Amphitheater. Though Valens’ career was cut short at 17 years of age by the events of Feb. 3, 1959, when the plane he, Buddy Holly, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson were traveling in crashed in Iowa, his music remains highly influential. Mixing stories, film clips and live performances by the likes of Hector Flores and Denise Carlos (Las Cafeteras), Jose Varela (Cutty Flam) and Angie Monroy (The McCharmlys), this event is a wonderful opportunity for long time fans to hear old favorites such as “La Bamba,” “Donna” and “Come On, Let’s Go,” while newcomers to Valens sound will find this show to be the perfect introduction to his music.
