It’s one thing to read The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook and wonder what you’d do in such a dire situation. But how about living it?

That will be possible – in a safe way – beginning Saturday as the Fleet Science Center opens a summer exhibit, “Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Experience.”

The event, making its West Coast debut, is based on the global best-selling handbook series, originally published in 1999, and will offer visitors a look at survival strategies and escape tactics too.

There will be hands-on challenges and puzzles designed to provide skills needed to overcome unexpected real-life scenarios, from staying calm under pressure to thinking logically and being prepared.

The exhibit will include iconic imagery from the book series, along with superhero-themed graphics, artifacts and photos to hint at actual stories of survival.

There also will be time to take a moment and honor everyday heroes who face worst-case scenarios head-on, including first responders, wildlife rescue workers, psychologists and physical trainers.

The Survival Gymnasium will test visitors with 13 challenges, from learning how to jump from a moving train car and picking a lock to escaping from quicksand and surviving an avalanche. There will be step-by-step instructions, expert advice and immersive training for each challenge to help viewers develop the essential survival skills required in each dire situation.

Graphics also will reveal how to identify anxiety and fear within the body, to shed light on the impact of stress, physical exhaustion and disorientation in life-or-death situations.

Listening stations will feature the original audiobook, narrated by the late actor Burt Reynolds, to provide additional advice and insider tips.

Finally, a live actor, playing the role of the Worst-Case Pro, will roam the gallery, to share lines and pro tips while engaging Fleet Science Center crowds.

The “Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Experience” is produced by Exhibits Development Group and developed by Geoffrey M. Curley + Associates in collaboration with Quirk Books. The exhibition is locally sponsored in part by the city of San Diego.
