World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana celebrated the debut of its new Exchange Pavilion in Balboa Park, with the grand opening set for this weekend.

The curving, yellow wall held by a metal structure is designed to imitate the San Diego-Tijuana border wall. The pavilion, which is made to look like the actual wall, has a gap in the middle of the structure. It also has an electronic ticker that shows poems.

The pavilion can be used for public gatherings and events.

The structure is part of World Design Capital, meant to celebrate the design of a community. This rendition is the first joint application, honoring the cross-border region, in the history of the program. Past sites included Seoul, South Korea, and Mexico City.

The grand opening takes place this weekend. A full list of events can be found on World Design Capital’s website.
